How long real fur lasts

Real fur can last many years. It can also be ruined in a season. The difference is usually not the winter you wore it in. It is heat, insects, abrasion, sweat, and moisture that was never allowed to leave.

What ages it

• Moths and carpet beetles, especially in a dark closet over summer.
• Heat: dryers, dashboards, radiators, and hot attics. The skin dries and cracks.
• Sweat and skin oil along a hat band or a glove palm.
• Abrasion where a brim, cuff, or palm rubs the same spot.
• Being put away damp, or sealed in plastic.

What actually helps

Dry it slowly after weather. Shake it so the hair does not stay matted. Store it cool, dark, and breathable, with cedar nearby rather than chemicals poured on the fur. Have it cleaned when it is soiled, by someone who cleans fur. The steps are in how to clean real fur and on the fur care page.

Ordinary cold is not the enemy. Coyote fur hats, gloves, and mittens are for that cold. The pieces are meant to be worn. Wear is not the same thing as neglect.
